You might remember reading this great blog post recently about a school all the way up in Iceland and their brilliant efforts in the European Maths Challenge 2012.
In the blog, we wrote that Hofsstadaskoli was the most northerly Mathletics school in the world. We heard today from the teachers and students over at (the quite frankly BRILLIANTLY named) Brønnøysund barne- og ungdomsskole in Norway, telling us that they are in fact more than one degree further north! For those of you with scientific minds, they are at 65 degrees, 28 minutes North, while Hofsstadaskoli are at about 64 degrees, 5 minutes North.
For those of us with less scientific minds – here is a little illustrative assistance!

We are always happy to stand corrected and are pleased to set the record straight. Brrrrrr. Must be chilly up there!!
If you are at a school even further North than Brønnøysund barne- og ungdomsskole, we would be very happy to welcome you to the Mathletics community!

The European Schools Challenge 2012 has now begun, launching 48hrs of exciting competition and mathematical action right across Europe! Hundreds of thousands of students in schools and homes across the region will be battling to prove their mathematical prowess and be crowned No.1. All results from the practice period have now been reset with all students now collecting points for their competition total.

The huge annual Mathletics schools event – The European Maths Challenge – has been going down a storm over all Europe, with great stories flooding in.
The team at Mathletics Towers heard today from Hofsstadaskoli in Iceland – currently the most northerly Mathletics school in the world – who have been taking part in the practice period for the EMC. The school have expanded their use of the program across the entire school to give everyone a chance to take part.
Elísabet Benónýsdóttir, ICT Co-ordinator at the school, says “Our children are super excited about the challenge they have been crazy busy working on Mathletics both at home and in school. Some teachers are also super excited about the challenge and are bringing old computers from home to give students better and more access to the site!”
Hofsstadaskoli will be holding their own award ceremony soon after the challenge is over with prizes for the school’s best class, best student, best girl and best boy – we look forward to hearing all about it, guys!

The practice period for the European Schools Maths Challenge 2012 has now begun, launching seven days of exciting practice and mathematical action right across Europe. The competition period begins next Monday, so for now students can sign into the website to learn their way around and begin warming up.
We also advise all schools to ensure their students can access the website from the school network. This is the time to address any technical issues the school many have. There is a TECHNICAL HELP guide under the “Resources” tab of the websbite if needed – and we are here to help!

We always love to hear about schools who are as passionate about maths are we are here at Mathletics Towers. One such school is St. John’s International School in Brussels, Belgium. Maths Co-ordinator at St John’s, Paul Motwani, recently wrote to tell us about the regular “Magic Math Assemblies” held at the school.
The assemblies always include a combination of what Mr Motwani likes to call ‘The Fantastic Four’. The 4 elements are Math, Magic, Mystery, and Chess (Mr Motwani himself is an International Chess Grandmaster!). The students at St John’s love to get a bonus dose of chess in the assemblies – plus chess is a highly logical, mathematical sort of game.
Mr Motwani says “my assemblies are always a really fun mix of puzzles which delight the Grade 1-5 children as much as the prizes that they can win here by getting them right! It’s always a super-exciting, action-packed 45 minutes.” Students who have been making particularly good use of Mathletics also receive special awards in the assemblies.

One of the Magic Math Assemblies takes place in the magnificent PAC theatre at St John's Intl Schol
We think these assemblies are fantastic – just the sort of excitement around maths that we love to see here at Mathletics (plus extra helpings of magic and chess mixed in!)
Does your school hold similar events? We’d love to hear about them – take some pictures and send us an email at europe@3plearning.com
Over the last year we have been quietly preparing behind the scenes to bring you the next generation of Mathletics

The Mathletics community is growing rapidly with now over 3.5 million students. We are investing to ensure that we can continue to grow and improve the program to support all our users across the globe. We are introducing a fresh look and feel, as well as host of new features, which you will experience as we start moving schools over to a brand new, faster, more robust, platform that has been purpose built using the most advanced technology.
*Important* – Check that you are running the latest version of Flash Player (10.3) on ALL computers in school.
Visit the Mathletics homepage and right-click anywhere on the screen. A pop-up box will show you the version you are currently running – if you see anything less than version 10.3 you will need to update at http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer. This is a really quick process and will only take a minute or two.
Download our technical update for your ICT technician or support provider. This will provide a technical background to the work we are doing. That’s it! We will take care of everything else.
What to expect…
Don’t worry, this won’t be scary! The upgrade will take place during the half-term break and your access to Mathletics will continue as normal. As always, the Mathletics team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have – do not hesitate to contact us.
We look forward to introducing you to the new look program!

Soldier, soldier!

- Beautiful in blue!

- Cool…

- Starry eyed!

- Fruity!

- Hoppy Mathlete Day!
A big thank you to all of the staff and students at BSN Diamanthorst for sharing their photos with us, a lot of effort has gone into making these costumes! We hope you all have a great summer break and we look forward to kicking off the new school year with you in September!
“Students from Veliki Bukovec Primary School in a rural area of Croatia participated in The European Maths Challenge which was recently held over the internet.
All students from grades 5 – 8, about 180 of them, took active part in the competition and their knowledge, accuracy and speed of solving tasks placed the school in the top 50 European schools. Students during the seven days solved correctly around 200,000 tasks collecting nearly half a million points.
Seventh grade pupils were the most successful class in Croatia after collecting 121,265 points, and the best individual result was achieved by Stela Lilek who took 160th place in competition with tens of thousands of European students and second place in Croatia with 19,564 points.
Students were working diligently to solve tasks in different areas of mathematics, showing us that the Internet as a medium for learning suited them, and that English language is no barrier. Teachers from Veliki Bukovec Primary School are very proud of their success of their students and want to support them in learning using modern technology.”

There have been many celebrations at BSN Junior School Diamanthorst following their fantastic performance in the European Maths Challenge…….
IoanCalin had a lot to celebrate after emerging victorious from his battle for the top spot! – “I have been thinking about this competition since last year. I played outside and then worked on Mathletics and then played outside again. I was happy when I won. I want to say well done to Lev K of Estonia and Zolihan S of Norway as they worked hard too and I thought one of them was going to win.”
With 3 classes in the Top Ten this year, I think it is safe to say all students involved enjoyed the event! –
Sarah: “I like to have a challenge. I worked really hard and I got the most points in Year 3.”
Konoka: “Mathletics is fun and I like to be in the Hall of Fame.”
The subject leader for maths, Mrs Pogson, wanted to pass on her congratulations to her students - “I’m always amazed at how much effort the children put in to these competitions. The Hall of Fame is a great motivator, the boards for individual countries this year was a great idea, as more children had the chance to be recognised. I’m really proud of the children and their achievements. Well done to everyone.”
Great work everyone, we are looking forward to an even more exciting event in 2012!! In the meantime, keep Mathleticking!
