You might remember reading this great blog post recently about a school all the way up in Iceland and their brilliant efforts in the European Maths Challenge 2012.

In the blog, we wrote that Hofsstadaskoli was the most northerly Mathletics school in the world. We heard today from the teachers and students over at (the quite frankly BRILLIANTLY named) Brønnøysund barne- og ungdomsskole in Norway, telling us that they are in fact more than one degree further north! For those of you with scientific minds, they are at 65 degrees, 28 minutes North, while Hofsstadaskoli are at about 64 degrees, 5 minutes North.

For those of us with less scientific minds – here is a little illustrative assistance!

We are always happy to stand corrected and are pleased to set the record straight. Brrrrrr. Must be chilly up there!!

If you are at a school even further North than Brønnøysund barne- og ungdomsskole, we would be very happy to welcome you to the Mathletics community!

The European Schools Challenge 2012 has now begun, launching 48hrs of exciting competition and mathematical action right across Europe!  Hundreds of thousands of students in schools and homes across the region will be battling to prove their mathematical prowess and be crowned No.1. All results from the practice period have now been reset with all students now collecting points for their competition total.

14th May – 24hrs covering the Challenge Curriculum

The huge annual Mathletics schools event – The European Maths Challenge – has been going down a storm over all Europe, with great stories flooding in.

The team at Mathletics Towers heard today from Hofsstadaskoli in Iceland – currently the most northerly Mathletics school in the world – who have been taking part in the practice period for the EMC.  The school have expanded their use of the program across the entire school to give everyone a chance to take part.

Elísabet Benónýsdóttir, ICT Co-ordinator at the school, says “Our children are super excited about the challenge they have been crazy busy working on Mathletics both at home and in school. Some teachers are also super excited about the challenge and are bringing old computers from home to give students better and more access to the site!”

Hofsstadaskoli will be holding their own award ceremony soon after the challenge is over with prizes for the school’s best class, best student, best girl and best boy – we look forward to hearing all about it, guys!

Check out the video of the students at Hofsstadaskoli in action!

The first 12 hours of this year’s Middle East Maths Challenge has seen some heated competition and some excellent results so far.

Early statistics show that, on average, students have already increased their average score by 25% – which is excellent.

As things currently stand, the Top Student hall of fame is a closely fought contest between students in the UAE and Saudi Arabia – how will this change as the competition progresses?

Below are a snapshop of the leaderboards as they currently stand… how will things change as we move through this year’s 48hour event? Will Saaim J keep the No.1 spot? You can of course track the leaders any time, and in real time, on the Middle East Maths Challenge homepage.

St. John Fisher School, Chicago IL

Students have walked for their schools.  Students have jumped rope for their schools.  This year, St. John Fisher students will COMPUTE for their school.

The spring fundraiser is designed to support the excellence of Catholic education in their community.  They are inviting sponsors to support their future engineers, accountants, financial analysts, artists and architects as they demonstrate their mastery of math operations, problem solving, and critical thinking skills in a school-wide competition called “Having SUM Fun for Fisher’s Future.”

Each student in K – 8 invites their relatives and friends to sponsor his or her participation in the school-wide math competition.  As the children compete in the “Mathletics” program, they are awarded points for their progress. Time dedicated to the Mathletics program results in a quick accumulation of points and a greater proficiency in math!  The students are encouraged to get as many sponsors as possible for their points earned over a one-week period at varying levels.  The students can also gain sponsorship for a classroom or an entire grade level.

Math Competition Format

April 23rd – April 29th – Round 1 begins.  The students can log on to the “Mathletics” program at any time and work towards earning individual points.  Points earned this week will determine individual finalists in our final competitions. Students will also be given at least one opportunity to earn points at school.

April 30th – May 6th – Round 2 begins.  At this point, the students will be working towards earning points for the homeroom competition.  All points from round 1 will accrue into round 2.  The homeroom at each grade level that has earned the most cumulative points after two weeks will be awarded!

May 10th – Live competitions will take place for students in 1st thru 8th grades. The student from each homeroom who earns the most points will advance to live competitions.  The winner of the live competition at each grade level will win an iPad!  The kindergarten winner will be based on the most points scored from April 23rd to April 29th.

Sponsorship Competition

In addition to the math competition, there will also be a competition held for the most sponsorships.  The homeroom that raises the most money (including both individual sponsorships, homeroom sponsorships and fair share of grade level sponsorships) will win an out-of-uniform day and pizza party.  The individual student who raises the most money will win an iPad!

Hello to all WEG participants! I am very excited about the upcoming games, and I hope you are too! Thursday, February 16th I was flown to Calgary, where I met the other four Canadian Ambassadors and went to the head office of 3P Learning, which was very exciting. We had a briefing on our duties as Ambassador, filmed some promotional videos, listened to a special guest speaker, and visited a very awesome sports school. We also got to ride in a limo, be on the news, have our meals together, and, because Samsung is sponsoring WEG, we all received Samsung Galaxy Tablets.

Back at home, I sent a letter to the mayor of Lloydminster, who kindly responded.  I am going to meet with him to talk about WEG.  I am looking forward to our meeting.  I also sent letters to the Saskatchewan Minister of Education, the Premier of Saskatchewan, and the Prime Minister of Canada.  I have also made presentations to the staff of my school as well as another in my school division.  They are also excited about WEG.  I am working on hanging posters all around my city to get the word out to all people that WEG is very fun and unique.

I can’t believe that last year WEG set a Guinness World Record for most people competing online at once, with over 1 MILLION students competing at the same time. Also last year we had 5.5 million people register from over 230 different countries and nations. So far this year, we have 4 million people registered, and we’re hoping to beat last year’s total. I hope that we’ll be able to pull together and beat our Mathometer record, our Spellometer record, and set a great Sciometer record. My personal goal this year is to crack the top ten in World Math Day. Last year, I placed 43rd, and in 2010 I placed 54th. I hope you keep practicing, and GOOD LUCK!!
